Creating History

Exhilarated

I’ve finally performed right before a full crazy loud crowd at Istana Budaya. A dream that I never ever thought in a million years would ever come true. It just did as of July 13, 2011.

A standing ovation, top notch performance, wild crowd and an excellent performance from everyone – all casts, stage management, crew, musicians, production team. A perfect moment I was so very thankful of. A moment when everything we’ve gone through paid off handsomely!

A night when I cried right after curtain call, because it was just so perfect! That moment when Tony immediately lifted me up high and swung me in the air congratulating me on my first ever show! A dream come true for me and definitely an event that will forever motivate me! Believe it and it shall be yours :)

That also marked the day my team and I created history in Malaysia! First ever Broadway musical to be staged back at home. Thankful I'm a part of it! Alhamdulillah

Sneak A Peek

Yes, preparations are intense! A lot of dress rehearsals + tech run. In and out of the wardrobe to get changed. In and out of the make up room to get done up! Moving through gigantic sets and props! Feels a lil like a part time superman, really.

and still, there was time for me to trip and fall on steels and props. Istana Budaya is so huge, it has all these 'super canggih things' that falls from the top, appears from the basement, flies from the wings - it's really like a box of chocolate. Surprise surprise! Gone are my fingers and knees too! Hello bruises!

Never have I thought it'd be this crazy intense in the world of performing arts. Truly enjoying the experience! One day till our show! See you guys at Istana Budaya! I am so gonna cry when show ends!

Btw, to those who wrote to me to request for pictures, I do tweet some behind-the-scenes via twitter at @aliaishk (since I don't have much time to blog anymore)! =)

Baking a History

Blessed to be able to witness historical moments.

No, I don't mean the rallies and riots that took place over the weekend.

The week has finally arrived! This week, my team and I will be creating history in Malaysia - being a part of the first ever Broadway Musical in the country. Excited and nervous at the same time and been through ups and downs together, it has been nothing but the most amazing experience I could ever ask for! A journey that does not come easily.

A dream come true!

Very proud of every single one of us in the production. From the cast to the crew, orchestra, stage builders, sound engineers, stage management, the whole production team. I'm overwhelmed! Let's do this my Dreamgirls!

One Step Closer

Friday was our first day of tech run.

A whole 15 hours of being mic-ed up and buckled up in high heels. No doubt it was tiring, and a killer to be in high heels for the longest time.

BUT I've never been any happier! A step closer to a dream come true. Rehearsing and being able to allow every single part of my body to perform on Istana Budaya's stage when the big day comes!

Despite the roadblocks and rallies which have all started when we ended our rehearsals late last night, everyone was in a happy mood and all pumped up! Of course by the time we got home, all of us crashed, and it was the most difficult thing trying to wake up for rehearsals again this morning. Hang in there my Dreamgirls! =)

One thing's for sure, I'm gonna forever remember these moments!!

Bump In

means we start rehearsing with the need for the longest concentration span ever. From the cast, orchestra, stage crew and tech guys!

As we watch the crew work really hard on stage with the props and sets. It all looks spectacular!!

Sets and props, costumes and lightings. The need to rehearse scene by scene, again and again to make sure the lighting effects, the sets, sound and technical blends in perfectly together. It has to be perfect by the mili-second! I, for the record has never been in a production ever before in my entire life. And this time, I have truly been given the greatest opportunity to learn how a production works! Gosh, I have a whole new level of respect for performers, I swear. But you've got to be in the business to be able to say "I understand", coz if not, you just won't.

I used to think that, nothing beats the hardwork needed in a corporate world. But I was wrong. Performing arts is insane!

It's only a week away, and as much as I am nervous waiting for the big day to come and excited to get through next week, I'm also starting to feel very sad. Night and day, it's all about Dreamgirls (and I've been dreaming about it a lot too! Geez...), I cannot imagine how difficult it will be on that 24th of July, after our final show. I think I will cry! I won't be able to see the cast as much anymore afterwards.

17 exhausting days of Dreamgirls to go. All the best team!  = )

Sweet Glory

As Dreamgirls show gets closer, the pressure rises day by day and schedule gets even more complicated for everyone. It has been a good 2 weeks at Istana Budaya and it's gonna get more challenging the next 2 weeks. The final 2 weeks.

But that aside for a bit, yesterday was our big futsal tournament. The Malaysia Investment Banking Association (MIBA) 2011. Last year I ran for athletics, but I thought why not give futsal a go this year. This time it was hosted by Maybank Investment. Given that the whole week, rehearsals for Dreamgirls ran up till close to midnight, I wasn't able to attend any of our futsal trainings, so I was pretty nervous to get through the tournament.

Firstly because, I play as striker, I overslept and I woke up feeling so exhausted! Must be a build up from rehearsals the whole week and because I was also on duty at Kak Yong's 'nikah' do the night before the game. Aisyah kept reminding me not to accidentally-fall-asleep when carrying the hantaran, it was too funny! Well of course I did not =)

Anyway, I got to the courts with the sleepiest face, really! But at the same time, I did feel the pressure. But you know what makes things easier, when you have awesome sporting teammates and colleagues who would come all the way to cheer us on. I get motivated too when I see us all clad in the same jersey as a team. Our mens team supported us when we played and we went to support them when they played. I love the energy and happy vibes I get when we train as one, everytime! Be it at training or competition. I'm weird like that! :):) The love you get being around them is massive! We became very close to each other since training started a few months ago, I was sad when tournament ended.

Playing as striker, the funniest bit was when we drew the first game and the team tried to raise my motivation level afterwards. Guess how they did it? Stuck my ears with loud musicals from Broadway, every single time I'm on break outside the courts :):):):) Oh my god, into the second game, I was already hyper and partially dancing in the courts. This is when I see my teammates and coach regretting giving me too much music, smacking their foreheads outside. "I think she eats vitamins A-Z la! I don't understand how can she be this hyper and happy all the time". Yes, in futsal you're supposed to be ganas, not all smiley and making friends, singing and dancing on cloud nine. LOL! But hey, it helped big time coz I scored 2 goals to win 3-0...and I made new friends in the court! Whoopdeedoo! If you know me well, music can almost make me do anything! Unfortunately, I cannot bring iPods into the courts.

It fills my system with great happiness to see how supportive my teammates are, and how hard/easy they try to make sure I stay happy everytime. I'm truly blessed to be in the same team as them!

Loving the soft toy tiger from Maybank!

Starting from then on, we went on to win all the other five games! So did our boys! :) I swear team dynamic was at its peak throughout the tournament especially during finals. It felt like we were in a super big international tournament with all the other teams watching the final game and we had an awesome commentator to spur up the game too. Super love it! I was just overwhelmed when I heard the final whistle which marked the end of the game. It was even sweeter to see our coaches beaming with happiness as he watched both teams, the guys and the girls go up to receive the champion's award.

Alhamdulillah, WE ARE THE CHAMPION for both ladies and men's team!
Well done my CIMB-futsal loves! You guys are awesome!

Well played CIMB Investment!
=)

Right now, all I can think about is getting some rest. Can't even bring myself to get up this morning! Body aches everywhere. Oh dear me. But then again, sleeping is boring. Maybe I'll read. I'm such a confused child!

Friday 1 July 2011

Hello July!

A dream come true. Feeling very blessed to be having a month like this month - the first ever in my life :) 13 days till Dreamgirls' first show and 25 days till I'll be able to wake up and look back at the greatest 2 months I've had working for the first Broadway in Malaysia. Hello July!

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. But most of all, I'm feeling very thankful to be a part of something so great like this.

Hello DREAMGIRLS
